A Closer Look at Current Employee Journeys
Don’t just take our word for it, here are two of our employees’ journeys which detail the impact Thompson Taraz Rand have had on their careers and their welfare.
Having qualified from St Andrew’s university with a degree in history, I started working at TTR in April 2018. I received extensive training, both on the job and from technical courses, when I started studying for the ACA qualification. I have really enjoyed getting to learn both the technical and practical elements of the job and have always felt encouraged to ask questions and to ask for help when needed.
What is great about working at a smaller firm is that you gain a wide variety of experience; you are not pigeon-holed into one niche area. Since joining, I have gained experience in accounts, audits, VAT, corporation tax and personal tax – even becoming a quizmaster for one of the firm’s regular quizzes!
Since I started with no accountancy experience, I have progressed through my professional qualification becoming fully qualified with first time passes and becoming a junior manager in the Cambridge office with responsibility for managing a diverse portfolio of clients.
There is a lot of room for development and progression within the company and we are always looking for more good people to embrace the potential for additional responsibilities.
Being based in central Cambridge is a fantastic location and it’s great to be able to go out for lunch and to the pub with the team. It’s a really friendly environment and you get to know everyone well from the start.
Accounts Manager
After 3 years of teaching, I decided to change career when I moved to Cambridge. Being interested in numbers and having good communication skills, accountancy was a natural choice. I joined Thompson Taraz Rand in 2016 and have really enjoyed my 5 years with the firm to date.
The whole team were extremely friendly and I felt at home from the outset. Everyone was willing to help no matter what the problem which meant I felt part of the team very quickly. Having no prior accounts knowledge coming into the role, I was given jobs that were suitable to my level, starting with simple jobs and swiftly working my way up to more complex jobs. I also assisted senior colleagues on a variety of audits at clients’ premises.
In 2018, I volunteered to go into the tax department due to a shortage of staff at the time where I worked under another amazing manager who taught me about all aspects of tax, including trusts, personal and corporation tax to name a few. I had to discuss technical terms with clients and learnt a lot about Thompson Taraz Rand’s processes; this secondment really helped in giving me a broad range of experience.
After a year in the tax department, TTR took over a firm in Comberton, to the west of Cambridge. As this was closer to my home, I was asked if I wanted to relocate to this office to make my commute easier. This was great and allowed me to meet both new colleagues and a new diverse range of clients. I was given the additional responsibility of managing my own portfolio of clients which has really helped me to develop and I have enjoyed building a trusted rapport with each of them.
The support with training from the firm has been excellent from day one and I am so happy to have recently qualified as a Chartered Accountant. Due to my teaching background, I have helped to develop the Comberton office into a training office, taking on further responsibility and becoming the main trainer and mentor for new starters.
